Instagram videos lead to guilty plea in careless firearm case

A judge questioned why a man on a work permit obtained a firearms licence after court heard videos showed him allegedly shooting guns recklessly from a vehicle on Crown land in Georgian Bay Township.

Gurkanwal Singh, 24 recently pleaded guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom to careless use of a firearm.

Court heard that on Feb. 3, 2025, officers responded to a call for service in the Georgian Bay area, where they found a Jeep stuck on Crown land. Singh was identified as the driver, and firearms were located inside the vehicle.

The court heard police later obtained video footage from an Instagram account allegedly linked to Singh, showing him shooting firearms in a reckless manner from the same vehicle. Investigators reviewed multiple videos dating back over time, including footage showing him using several firearms and discharging a gun from inside the vehicle.

Court heard Singh had obtained his Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) while in Canada on a work permit.

Justice Edward Carleton questioned why Singh had obtained the licence and purchased firearms.

Defence counsel told the court Singh was not a hunter and described his actions as a “foolish decision.”

The Crown argued Singh should receive a $1,000 fine along with forfeiture of the firearm, while the defence sought an absolute discharge.

Justice Carleton ordered a pre-sentence report, and the matter is scheduled to return to court later this month.

And yet our government thinks they have gun control. Check put the website to see who can get a PAL in Canada. You have to be a resident, not a citizen of Canada. You might not even have to supply a picture if your religion does not allow it. And with the handgun in the picture you would think there would be more charges. Our government does not have any idea what they are doing as far as gun control is concerned. Why would the crown not want a more severe sentence?

  2. William Kidd says:

I just looked at the PAL application process. It says you have to be a resident of Canada, it doesn’t say you have to be citizen. You may not even have to provide a picture of yourself if your religion does not allow it. Looks like the Liberal gun control has a couple flaws.

  3. Norm Raynor says:

There is no defense for these actions. Also how does a non resident get a PAL? Deportation after paying the fine is the proper solution. And by the way who is the defense attorney? The liberal government claims to want to control guns but this is clearly a big fail. If this had been anyone else they would lose all their guns and be banned from owning a gun for 10 years. And what about all the others in the picture?

  4. Tim Young says:

We really need to look at how he was able to get a PAL in the first place.
As a temporary resident I would hope there is a very different set of questions in the application on qualifications and purpose.
As far as the penalty, it is way too soft.
Higher fine. Loss of PAL and forearm

please remove these people from canada.

Im still questioning why there was only 1 charged. With all the videos etc. That I had seen everyone of them should of been charged

  7. Reuben Pyette says:

These guys involved have no business with firearms. Immigrants do not have the social understanding of the use of firearms in our country, as represented from the evidence. This man should be deported for his actions immediately and banned from reentry into Canada.
