Learn about Muskoka’s women’s shelters, win prizes at this weekend’s MAC Show

From Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group (MWAG):

Have you always wanted a handmade quilt?

Do you know which Muskoka towns have shelters with services for women and their children, escaping violence?

That’s the question Muskoka Women’s Shelters and Services will be asking on ballots for a chance to win one of the quilts or other craft items at the Muskoka Arts and Crafts summer show from July 19 through 21. Hint: Chrysalis House is in Huntsville and Interval House is in Bracebridge.

There is no cost to fill out a ballot.

The quilts, valued at $1,000 each, were made and donated by community member Sandy Rasmussen. A handblown glass bird feeder has been donated by the organization’s executive director Rachelle Walker. She has also laser engraved landscapes, dragonflies, birds and abstract designs onto water bottles and mugs to be given away as prizes. Other items include a wire tree sculpture made by operations manager Samantha Kosynski, two handcrafted wooden bowls and a wooden wand made handcrafted by Brian Schell, and adorable kits for trying needle felting at home from Feltalala. The kits have everything you need to felt a sculpture of Winnie the Pooh or Piglet.

And while you’re at the booth you can learn more about other outreach programs, transitional housing and how you can help support the shelters. As well as emergency shelters, the organization offers free, confidential and educational support groups for women.

“We’re grateful to be welcomed back to the MAC show for the second year in a row,” said Walker. “This is a wonderful event and we’re hopeful this will give us the opportunity to educate the public about our agency and its services, and offer something fun at the same time.’
