A Port Carling man who decided to skip a ride check had his day in court recently.
Appearing in a Bracebridge courtroom last month, Alex Vanderjagt, 35, pled guilty to refusing a breath sample.
Court heard that on Dec. 9, 2022, the Bracebridge OPP was conducting a ride check on Medora Street in Muskoka Lakes Township. At roughly 11:48 pm police observed a vehicle swerving as it approached the check, court heard. The police smelled alcohol from the driver, Vanderjagt, and asked for a breath sample.
“I don’t think so,” said Vanderjagt, according to the Crown attorney, before accelerating rapidly through the ride check.
The police found the car a short while later parked at a residence where Vanderjagt was now inside. Court heard Vangerjagt had barricaded himself inside the residence by putting a stepladder against the door. He turned himself in to police a few days later.
Court heard Vanderjagt has a criminal record and was sentenced to 60 days of house arrest and a one-year driving ban.
