Memorial Arena demolition begins August 12

Beginning Monday, August 12, the Town of Bracebridge will start preparing to decommission Memorial Arena. The project contractor will be on site to start preparing for demolition and will install fencing around the perimeter. The demolition process is estimated to last until the end of October. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

    A Bracebridge icon is being demolished. Shame, shame, shame on the elected representatives of this town for what they have done. Spend, spend, spend on a new arena when the one we have/had is perfectly good. Then the taxes go up. In Europe a 75 year old buildings is considered to be new. Think, Windsor Castle and the thousands of very old buildings in France, Germany, Italy and Greece.

    Nearby residents should be very concerned if dust from the demolition drifts onto their property or they breathe it in. These 1940s buildings had significant asbestos, lead and other toxic substances used in their construction. Even dust without these substances can cause serious health issues. As a community we must stay on top of this major health risk.

    I wonder what measures are being taken to protect residents and what monitoring is being done by our health and bylaw departments?
