A Huntsville man was sentenced to jail time in a Bracebridge courtroom on Wednesday after pleading guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography.
The 33-year-old pled guilty to the two charges, which stem from a major OPP investigation carried out in 2022.
The court heard that on October 13, 2022, the OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in Huntsville, as the result of a cyber tip.
Court heard that the investigation ultimately uncovered 1,707 unique images and 15 unique videos of children engaged in sexual activities. It was believed that some of the victims in the images and videos were as young as three years old.
It was also determined that the man had distributed some of the illegal material via a messaging service.
Justice Edward Carlton was presented with a joint position for the sentencing of the Huntsville man, who the court heard has a previous, but unrelated, criminal record.
Justice Carlton accepted the joint position, which called for 12 months in jail, followed by two years on probation and five years under several court orders including restrictions on how close he could be to parks, daycares, schools, and other locations.
The name of the defendant has been withheld due to a publication ban to protect the minors involved.
The man was arrested as part of Project MAVERICK, which was carried out by investigators and analysts that make up the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet. The 27 policing partners conducted 255 investigations, completed 168 search warrants, and seized 1,032 devices. In total, 428 charges were laid against 107 people. During the investigations, 61 victims were identified and referred to appropriate community-based resources for assistance, while an additional 60 children were safeguarded.
