New mural proposal for downtown Bracebridge highlights native fish species

The Bracebridge Development Services Committee is set to evaluate a new mural for downtown during their meeting this week. The proposed artwork, titled “We All Come From Water,” has been submitted by Toronto-based artist Jacquie Comrie.

A survey conducted on EngageBracebridge.ca from October to November 2024 invited property owners within the Business Improvement Area (BIA) to express their interest in hosting a mural on their buildings. The initiative garnered four submissions, after which the Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) selected 19 Taylor Road as the ideal location. This choice was attributed to the site’s prominent visibility from Taylor Road as visitors enter downtown Bracebridge and its closeness to the upcoming Northlander train station, expected to open in 2026.

In December 2024, another survey on EngageBracebridge.ca engaged the community in selecting the theme for the next mural in downtown Bracebridge. Additionally, a social media poll on the Town’s Corporate Facebook page resulted in a total of 150 votes, with the favored theme centering on nature and the environment, celebrating Bracebridge’s stunning natural landscape.

Muskoka Conservancy reviewed the proposed mural design and confirmed that the silhouette and scale patterns represent native fish species, including Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Lake Trout, and Brown Trout. While the design artistically interprets these species, it is not meant to serve as a literal or scientific representation.

With over ten years of experience and more than 30 outdoor murals completed across Canada, Comrie is known for creating installations that serve as accessible and therapeutic spaces, promoting inclusivity and community engagement.

The proposed mural will be located on the east-facing exterior brick wall of 19 Taylor Road. The wall currently features chipped paint and will require scraping, power-washing, and priming to ensure the mural’s longevity.

As part of the 2025 Municipal Budget and Business Plan, a $19,000 allocation for Public Art has been designated to support this initiative.
