An active lifestyle is important no matter your age. The physical and mental health benefits of movement are well documented, contributing to improved strength and fitness, longevity, and reduced stress.
For those aged 55 or older, the OSGA (Ontario Senior Games Association) provides opportunities to get active both physically and mentally. With the biennial Ontario 55+ Summer Games coming up in August, the local OSGA 55+ District 11 (Muskoka/Haliburton) encourages everyone to consider getting involved, and perhaps even qualify to represent District 11 at the Regional Games.
“OSGA 55+ events provide active living opportunities for seniors age 55 and older that are both physically and mentally stimulating. Having been cooped up indoors for so long because of COVID, individuals are itching to get back to some form of normalcy,” says local OSGA 55+ representative, Karen Litchfield. “The OSGA events provide an opportunity to do that and they allow you to participate with individuals who are also age 55 or older. These events also allow you to have fun in a competitive non-threatening setting while helping you to maintain an active lifestyle.”
District 11 will be holding golf, pickleball, tennis, and walking events in June. The deadline to register is May 18. Contact Mary Johnson at 705-754-1884.
Participants must pay a District 11 fee of $10 as well as a $15 OSGA membership fee, paid directly to the OSGA. Some events also have facility fees.
Due to COVID, OSGA 55+ events are limited to the following outdoor activities, but indoor activities including euchre, bridge, and bowling will be reintroduced as risks continue to decrease.
- Golf at Blairhampton in Haliburton, Wednesday, June 8. Shot gun start at 9 a.m. There will be a $55 (plus tax) fee which includes 18 holes, power cart and lunch.
- Pickleball at the Stanhope courts in Algonquin Highlands on Friday, June 17. Men’s, ladies, and mixed doubles. Court fees apply.
- Tennis at the Stanhope courts in Algonquin Highlands on Tuesday, June 14. Men’s, ladies, and mixed doubles.
- Walking at the Haliburton docks on Wednesday, June 1. Men’s and ladies.
Peterborough is hosting the Ontario 55+ Summer Games from August 9-11.
