As Remembrance Day arrives, retirement communities in Orillia and Gravenhurst proudly present the 4th Annual Poppy Project, a community-driven tribute designed to honour the bravery and sacrifices of Canadian veterans. This year’s displays, set on the front lawns of The Atrium Retirement Residence in Orillia and The Manor at Gravenhurst in Gravenhurst are more than just memorials—they are intergenerational projects that unite local schoolchildren, senior groups, and community organizations in a heartfelt expression of gratitude.
The Poppy Project invites community members to create handmade poppies with personalized messages of thanks and remembrance on the back of each one, which are then “planted” on the lawns of each residence in a powerful visual tribute to those who have served. “Poppies are a symbol of remembrance and hope. Our veterans have made invaluable contributions to ensure peace and security for our country. I believe it is our patriotic duty to show support and honor our veterans for their sacrifices”, said Lorree Goheen, General Manager at the Atrium Retirement Residence.
In its fourth year, the Poppy Project has expanded, with increasing community involvement each year. Young students and community members create these poppies as a way to bridge generations and connect with veterans’ legacies “It is inspiring to see the residents of the Atrium Retirement Residence leading a meaningful poppy campaign. Their dedication to crafting hundreds of paper poppies and welcoming messages from the community and local schools creates a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance. By planting these poppies on the front lawn, we not only honour those who served but also bring together generations to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedoms. It’s a heartfelt reminder of the strength and unity within our community, and I am so proud to join the Atrium’s efforts in keeping this tradition alive.” Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North
The displays will be in place throughout the day on Remembrance Day, inviting the public to come and reflect. The day’s tributes culminate in a touching gesture: following the event, poppies with handwritten messages will be hand-delivered to local veterans and those actively serving, extending gratitude across generations.
“We honour our Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, and friends,”, said Joyce Witmer, a resident at Atrium Retirement Residence. “Brave Canadian Soldiers have been making sacrifices and dying since before we were born. It’s important we honour them now and always. My husband was a Veteran of the Korean War, the Poppies we’re putting out in the yard remind me of him and what he gave.” .
This Remembrance Day, The Atrium Retirement Residence in Orillia, ON and The Manor at Gravenhurst in Gravenhurst, ON, warmly invite the public to visit and experience the 2024 Poppy Project displays. It is a tribute to those who have bravely served and a celebration of unity, remembrance, and respect.
Lest we forget.
