Suspected impaired boater gets jail on weekends

A boater who refused a breathalyzer will be spending his weekends in jail for the next several months.

Matthew Williams, 30, of Moose Deer Point recently appeared in a Bracebridge courtroom to plead guilty to refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

The court heard that on September 22, 2024, police received a complaint regarding a possible impaired boater in Isaac’s Bay, near Moose Deer Point. The caller showed the police video footage of the alleged impaired boater.

When police confronted the boater, he became belligerent, screaming and swearing at officers, court heard, before refusing to provide a breath sample.

Court heard Williams has a previous conviction for driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to be served on weekends, a two-year driving ban and 12 months probation.
