Quick thinking staff at a local drive-thru helped get an impaired driver off the streets of Huntsville recently.
During a recent appearance in a Bracebridge courtroom, Stephen Sheppard, 38, was sentenced to jail time after pleading guilty to impaired driving.
Court heard that on Nov. 18, 2021, Sheppard was going through a drive-thru in Huntsville at roughly 2 pm when staff became concerned that he might be impaired.
Sheppard ordered four times before nearly falling asleep in the lineup, court heard. Restaurant staff asked him to wait in the parking lot in an effort to stall him from getting back on the road while they called the police.
Police arrived and it was eventually confirmed that Sheppard was impaired, blowing more than double the legal limit.
Court heard that Sheppard has a record for impaired driving and stunt driving.
“I expect the people at the drive-through were very concerned you would be back out on the roadway,” Justice Edward Carlton said in passing sentence.
Sheppard was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to be served intermittently, along with a two-year driving ban and probation.
