Wayback Wednesday: The Islander

From the Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre

Built in 1900, the Islander steamship sailed the Muskoka lakes until her retirement in 1953. Fortunately, her wheelhouse was saved and now sits on display in front of the Discovery Centre.

I’m glad I was born at a time that I can remember seeing, and although young, was a passenger on a couple of these original steamships. I can only now appreciate the experience. My mother took my sister and I on a partial excursion on I presume was the Islander out of Bala. We transferred mid lake to another ship and later that day returned to Bala by ship docking down below the beautiful CPR train station. Quite the adventure for a pre-teen of 9 or 10 is my guess. Boats that we passed were all mahogany launches up on the lakes so this was probably pre fibreglass days.
    Memories!! Mike Webb
