Wayback Wednesday: Woodley Park Motor Court fire, Bracebridge

This photo was posted by Dale Tingey in Muskoka History and Genealogy.

The Woodley Park Motor Court was located at Taylor Road and Woodchester Ave.

“I lived right across the street from Bamfords. Many fond memories of old Mr Bamford and Cora White who worked there. She was really good to all us kids. Taking my $0.25 allowance and going across the street to pick a comic book and a little paper bag full of penny candy. Man. Those were good times.”

Bamford’s store was located at the north west corner of what is now Taylor Road and Woodward Street.

Black’s store was located one block west at the north east corner of Taylor Road and York Street. (York Street – which runs north of Taylor Road – is often erroneously identified as Woodchester Avenue – which runs south of Taylor Road, opposite.)

As a pre-teen I patronized both stores, buying double bubble gum, jaw breakers, licorice sticks, etc. We most often went to Black’s as Mr. Bamford came across to us kids as gruff, frightening, and didn’t seem to like little boys, but Bamford’s was closer to our home on Woodward Street – and easier to sneak off to without getting caught wandering off too far from home.

And, I am pretty sure that Cora White was in the same class as I throughout Public School.
