Bracebridge driver runs out of gas, gets arrested for impaired

A Bracebridge driver who ran out of gas, ended up in the back of a police cruiser, court heard recently.

Appearing in a Bracebridge courtroom, Matthew McCaugue, 48, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol.

Court heard that on June 5, 2022, police were called to assist a disabled vehicle on Highway 118 east in Bracebridge. When they arrived they found a truck pulled over partially onto the roadway.

They spoke to the driver who explained he was on his way to Dwight when he ran out of gas. Police observed the driver had red eyes and slurred speech and he was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. He ultimately blew readings of more than twice the legal limit of alcohol.

Court heard he has no previous record and he was fined $1,00, given 12 months probation and banned from driving for 18 months.
