Empty beer cans and cigarette butts led police straight to a Bala break-and-enter suspect, a Bracebridge court heard recently.
Dean Chalykoff, 62, pleaded guilty to break and enter stemming from an incident that occurred in August of 2016.
Court heard that on Aug. 19, 2016, police received a call about a break-and-enter on Bala Falls Road in Bala. The building contained a storefront, which is under construction, and a one-bedroom residence.
The owner had been away for months, and upon his return, he discovered the house had been broken into and power tools had been stolen., court heard. However, the suspect also left behind empty beer cans and cigarette buts, which led to finding DNA and eventually the identity of the suspect.
Contacted by police, the suspect, Chalykoff, said he would turn himself in but ultimately failed to do so.
He was given a suspended sentence and 18 months probation.
