An Orillia man was in a Bracebridge courtroom recently to answer to a charge of driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in his system per 100 ml of blood.
Court heard that on Sept. 6, 2023, Huntsville OPP were called regarding a man pulled over in his car and drinking whiskey from a bottle while in the driver’s seat.
Police attended and found the car pulled over on Echo Hills Road near Dwight. The driver Steven Schriver, 52, said he had just pulled over to take a phone call.
A breathalyzer revealed readings of 220 mg of alcohol in his system, more than double the limit.
He was sentenced to a $2,000 fine and a one-year driving ban.

It’s alarming to read about such high levels of irresponsibility on the roads. This incident not only endangered the driver himself, but potentially others as well. Thankfully, the authorities intervened before any harm could occur. A one-year driving ban and a fine seem appropriate, but ongoing education about the dangers of drinking and driving is crucial.
