Georgian to close Muskoka campus, sell facility

Georgian College has announced it will consolidate its Orillia and Muskoka campuses into the Barrie Campus by fall 2026, following approval from the college’s Board of Governors.

The Orillia Campus is scheduled to close in summer 2026, with academic programs transitioning to the Barrie Campus starting in May. The Muskoka Campus in Bracebridge will officially close in August 2026.

College officials say the decision follows a comprehensive review of operational efficiencies, enrolment trends, labour-market demands, community impact, and the institution’s financial outlook.

“This is a difficult decision that we know will be felt deeply by our students, employees and communities,” said Kevin Weaver, President and CEO of Georgian College. “Recognizing these are challenging times and the sector is experiencing a labour disruption, I still felt it was important to advise our community of the decision. It’s the right decision for the long-term sustainability of the college and the success of our students.”

According to Georgian, there will be no impact on students’ graduation timelines or their ability to progress and complete their programs.

The consolidation is expected to generate approximately $23.5 million in savings over the next five years. As part of the transition, the Orillia Campus and its residence, along with the Muskoka Campus, will be sold.

Weaver emphasized that while the physical presence in Orillia and Muskoka will change, the college’s connection to the regions will not.

What a disaster. After these communities provided funding and land for these facilities they will apparently be sold off to the highest bidder. A slap in the face to all of us. The bill for the Bracebridge arena is over $125 million with interest.while a facility that can improve young people’s lives (and get them to stay in the community) and provide educational and life opportunities for those with limited options (working mothers one example) is shutting its doors. Where do our politicians priorities lie?
Time to put pressure on Council, the Mayor, MPP , MP and District Chair to stop this train wreck.

I guess Georgian will transfer ownership of the building and land back to the town for the same amount that was paid to the town. (Not likely to happen) This should be a learning opportunity for our town. Hind sight is 20/20 but if the town had leased the park to Nipissing and Georgian for $2 dollars a year for as long as they operated, then the town would still own a valuable piece of property. So in the future the town should not give any town owned assets away. They should lease with conditions that protect the town.
