GoFundMe launched for man who drowned in Gravenhurst

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the family of a 28-year-old Brampton man who drowned in Gravenhurst over the weekend.

According to organizers, Anuj Bansla came to Canada in December 2023 on a student visa with hopes of building a better future for himself and his family. He was pursuing an MBA while carrying the financial burden of an education loan and family debt, all while working to support himself in a new country.

“Anuj arrived in Canada with a suitcase, a student visa, and a heart full of dreams,” the fundraiser states. “He left everything familiar behind to build a better future.”

Those dreams were tragically cut short on June 21 when Bansla drowned in Gravenhurst. He was 28 years old.

Describing him as “one of the best hearts and kindest humans,” organizers say his family is now facing the difficult task of repatriating his remains to India, covering funeral expenses, and supporting his grieving parents.

“No family is ever prepared for a call like this — especially from thousands of miles away,” the campaign reads. “We are humbly asking for your help.”

The drowning remains under investigation by the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.

Police say officers, along with Muskoka EMS, responded to a possible drowning at approximately 5:50 p.m. on June 21 at the Gravenhurst Wharf on Steamship Bay Road.

A group of people had been spending time at the Ungerman Park cliffs when one person failed to resurface after jumping into the water. The man was pulled from the water and transported to Muskoka Wharf by nearby boaters. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased.
