A Gravenhurst man was snared in a nation-wide investigation on illegal gun parts.
Thomas Sams, 37, was recently sentenced in a Bracebridge courtroom on two counts of possessing a firearm while prohibited and one count of possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
This investigation began after police became aware of a business that was selling firearm parts. These parts are not compatible with other firearms and are used exclusively to create personally manufactured firearms, which are most commonly produced utilizing 3D printing technologies.
A probe that began in Montréal led to several arrests nationwide, with 11 individuals charged with 58 offences in Ontario. On June 20, 2023, 14 search warrants were executed by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) simultaneously, at locations across the province at Sams’ residence in Gravenhurst.
When the warrant was executed on Sams’ Gravenhurst residence, police found a 3D printer and firearms parts, along with nine jars of psilocybin, cannabis lollipops and cotton candy, and roughly 4,000 cannabis chocolate bars.
Sams had no license to sell cannabis and was prohibited from owning a firearm due to a previous trafficking conviction.
He was sentenced to another 10-year weapons ban, a $5,000 fine, 7.5 months under house arrest and 7.5 months under curfew.
