A Gravenhurst man is accused of impaired driving and damaging a convenience store.
David Mckenzie, 32, appeared in a Bracebridge courtroom earlier this month on charges of impaired driving and driving while prohibited.
Court heard on June 7, 2023, at roughly 1:30 pm Bracebridge OPP received a complaint regarding erratic driving on Hwy 118 West. Police were then flagged down by a motorist on Mortimer’s Point Road who said he had nearly been hit by another motorist who was driving erratically.
Police caught up with the suspect vehicle, which was driven by McKenzie, smelled alcohol on the driver and found a half bottle of whiskey in the car, the court heard. Blood alcohol readings came back with 287 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, more than triple the legal limit, court heard. McKenzie was also prohibited from driving at the time.
Court heard that on another occasion Bracebridge OPP were called to a convenience store in Gravenhurst. The owner reported that McKenzie had requested to charge his phone using one of the store’s electrical outlets. When the owner refused, McKenzie became enraged and smashed a cigarette case before damaging the front door of the store, court heard.
Court heard McKenzie was located at a nearby bar, shortly thereafter and was belligerent with officers before being arrested for mischief.
McKenzie originally pled guilty. However, he disagreed with some of the facts presented by the Crown and the judge ordered the plea be stricken from the record.
McKenzie was ordered to re-attend court to address the matter again at a later date.
