Gravenhurst man jailed after thefts and threatening store staff with knife

A Brandon Condrey, 33, of Gravenhurst, recently pleaded guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom to multiple charges, including theft and threatening store staff with a weapon.

Court heard that on Jan. 16, 2026, police were called regarding an incident at the Gravenhurst Shoppers Drug Mart. At roughly 11 a.m., staff reported an individual took a humidifier valued at more than $100 and left the store without paying.

The suspect was captured on security footage and was known to police as Condrey, who was subsequently arrested.

On Feb. 12, 2026, police received another call regarding a theft from a retail clothing outlet on Muskoka Road South in Gravenhurst. Court heard the suspect, later identified as Condrey, grabbed armloads of clothing and walked away.

Staff followed Condrey and requested he return the items. He then put down the clothing and pulled out a large knife, telling them to “back the f*** up.” He then picked up the clothing and continued walking.

Police arrived and arrested Condrey.

Court heard Condrey has a criminal record that includes multiple thefts, break-and-enters and convictions for eight violent offences.

Justice Edward Carleton pointed out Condrey had only been out of jail for a couple of months when he was re-arrested.

“You’re fortunate you’re not charged with robbery based on the facts I heard,” said Carleton.

Carleton accepted a joint sentence of 90 days in jail and 18 months probation, but cautioned it was at the “very low end of the range.”

Why did this judge only give a sentence of 90 days and 18 months of probation??? He said himself that the sentence was at the ” very low end of the scale” One would think that a convicted felon with multiple convictions including 8 violent offences would be handed a stiffer sentence. When is the justice system going to start doing their job? I for one am getting tired of these ” slaps on the wrist” for repeat violent offenders. Wake up and start giving sentences that match the crimes!
