A Gravenhurst woman found stumbling in the street had been the victim of a horrific knife attack, a Bracebridge court heard recently.
Justin Legg, 36, pled guilty to aggravated assault and impaired driving on Wednesday.
Court heard that on January 10, 2025, police were called after a woman was found stumbling in the street after having been stabbed.
The victim said she was visiting an acquaintance on Winewood Avenue in Gravenhurst. When she arrived, Legg approached, “seemingly to hug her,” court heard. Instead he stabbed her in the abdomen with a four-inch blade, court heard. The court heard the two were not in a relationship, were seemingly on good terms and the attack was completely unprovoked.
The defence maintained Legg was in the midst of a “cocaine bender” at the time of the assault but no further rationale was given.
The weapon was never recovered.
Three days later, on January 13 at 7:30 pm, a member of the public called police to report their concerns over the condition of a driver who had their vehicle stuck in the snow on Highway 11 Southbound at Doe Lake Road in Gravenhurst. Court heard that several people stopped to help the driver, later identified as Legg, and believed him to be intoxicated. Inside the vehicle, police found drug paraphernalia and a blood test came back positive for cocaine and other drugs in his system.
Legg was sentenced to 15 months in jail for the aggravated assault, 15 days to be served concurrently for impaired driving, two years of probation and a one-year driving ban.
