Highway 11 Driver Sentenced After Blowing Four Times Legal Alcohol Limit

A Greater Toronto Area man has been sentenced to jail after admitting to driving while heavily impaired on Highway 11 near Huntsville last winter.

Terry Simpson, 40, pleaded guilty in Bracebridge court to operating a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Court heard that shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2025, Ontario Provincial Police received reports of an erratic driver travelling southbound on Highway 11 in the Huntsville area.

Multiple motorists observed the vehicle weaving and behaving dangerously. Witnesses reported honking and flashing their lights in an attempt to alert the driver. The vehicle nearly struck a snowbank and almost collided with a parked tractor-trailer.

One concerned citizen followed the vehicle until it came to a stop. The caller approached the driver and later told police the man appeared to be intoxicated.

When officers arrived, they located an open bottle of Clamato juice and a bottle of vodka inside the vehicle.

A breath test later revealed Simpson had 330 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than four times the legal limit.

Cort found the circumstances of the offence warranted a custodial sentence due to the significant danger posed to the public.

Simpson was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to be served intermittently, and was prohibited from driving for two years.

In imposing sentence, the justice noted it is unusual for a first-time impaired driving offender to receive a jail term. However, given the level of impairment and the risk created for other road users, the principles of denunciation and deterrence required a period of incarceration.
