Impaired driver hits rock, breaks hip

A Gravenhurst driver had drugs and alcohol in his system when he crashed his car, a Bracebridge court heard recently.

Christopher Stead, 42, of Gravenhurst pled guilty to impaired driving stemming from an incident that occurred on April 17, 2023.

Court heard at 6:28 am on that day Bracebridge OPP received a call from a concerned citizen. The caller reported that a driver on Windermere Road had veered off the road striking a road sign before travelling through a ditch and striking a large rock. The caller reported that the driver was initially trapped inside but two witnesses had helped him exit the vehicle.

Police and firefighters arrived and found open alcohol inside the vehicle. The driver, Stead, was transported to the hospital for injuries that included a broken hip. At the hospital he became irate, yelling at nurses and pulling off his neck collar before being sedated, court heard.

Blood tests turned up alcohol and cocaine in his system. Court heard Stead had a criminal record and was a suspended driver at the time.

He was sentenced to a $1,000 fine, a 12-month driving ban and 12 months probation.

A 12 month driving ban will have little
    Consequence for this guy.
$ 1000.00 fine probably won’t mean much either.
Maybe he will kill someone when he does this again next month.
    What a joke!
