A police pursuit that stretched from Huntsville to Bracebridge and ended in a suspect ramming into a police barricade was the subject of a court hearing earlier this week.
On Wednesday Kyle Coombs, 28, of Brampton, pleaded guilty to a range of charges including failing to stop for police, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of an instrument used to forge credit cards.
Court heard that on Feb. 15, 2022, at approximately 9:15 pm Huntsville police were conducting routine radar enforcement on Highway 11 when Coombs drove past at 133 km/hr in a posted 100 km/hr zone.
The police attempted to pull Coombs over but he continued southbound on Highway 11. They then attempted to box him in on the highway, court heard, but he evaded them before taking the exit at Taylor Road in Bracebridge. There, the police had set up a barricade consisting of their cruisers but Coombs rammed into the cruisers and continued his efforts to evade police. Ultimately the police were able to tase Coombs in his vehicle and bring the chase to a conclusion.
Court heard that upon arrest Coombs smelled of alcohol, and was found to have an illegal knife, illegal taser, 20 g of cannabis, and a device used for forging credit cards in the vehicle.
Justice Edward Carlton said the situation was especially confounding in light of the fact Coombs has no previous criminal record.
“This is shocking conduct. It is exceptional conduct,” said Carlton. “It’s completely unacceptable and needs to be condemned in the strongest terms.”
Coombs was credited for 162 days spent in pre-trial custody and given 90 days of house arrest and a three-year driving ban in addition.
