A Huntsville man who shoplifted nearly $1,000 worth of liquor in less than a week found himself in front of a Bracebridge judge recently.
Jordan Bell, 33, pled guilty to two counts of theft and one count of possession of cocaine stemming from a pair of incidents in September of 2022.
Court heard that the first occurrence was on Sept. 24 when Bell visited the LCBO location in Huntsville and proceeded to steal roughly $400 of alcohol.
Bell went to the same LCBO again on Sept. 29 and was observed stealing liquor and hiding it in his clothing. He returned for a second time later the same day after changing his clothing and the OPP was notified.
The police arrived to see Bell fleeing the scene but they were able to find him hiding a short time later. This time Bell had stolen more than $500 worth of liquor. His backpack was also found to have 20 grams of cocaine and digital scales.
The Crown and defence put forward a joint position for a suspended sentence and eight months probation but Justice A.M. Nichols had issues with the proposal. The Justice said the sentence was very low for possessing 20 grams of cocaine.
Justice Nichols said she would need some time to consider the joint submission. Later the same day she returned to the matter and ultimately agreed to the proposal. She commented that it was at the “very lowest end of the spectrum” for possessing such large quantities of a dangerous street drug.
