Ontario Renews Nearly $480K for Muskoka Water Quality Monitoring Program

The Province of Ontario is continuing its investment in protecting Muskoka’s waterways, providing the District of Muskoka with $479,750 to support its Lake System Health Water Quality Monitoring Program.

The funding, provided through the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, will help the District continue monitoring water quality across lakes, rivers and other waterways throughout the region.

District Chair Jeff Lehman said the investment supports the science and partnerships needed to protect Muskoka’s watershed.

“Muskoka’s natural environment is the heart of our community and our economy,” said Lehman. “This continued investment supports the science, monitoring, and partnerships that help us protect what matters most, the health of our watershed and the sustainability of our water resources.”

Ontario Environment Minister Todd McCarthy said the province remains committed to safeguarding the region’s internationally recognized lakes and rivers.

For more than 45 years, the District has monitored the health of over 70 lakes annually, collecting data on nutrients, chloride levels and oxygen content. The long-term monitoring program provides valuable information about how local water systems are changing and helps guide environmental protection efforts.

According to the District, staff funded through the provincial program analyze water samples and track trends that can identify emerging environmental concerns.

“Long-term monitoring gives us the data and insight needed to make evidence-based decisions,” said Christy Doyle, the District’s Director of Watershed Programs. “This funding allows our teams to continue their work tracking trends, identifying risks, developing and delivering innovative and contemporary environmental policies and programs, and responding quickly to protect Muskoka’s watershed.”

The program aligns with the District’s 2023–2026 Strategic Plan priorities, including environmental preservation, climate action and building resilience to environmental change.

More information about Muskoka’s environmental initiatives and monitoring results is available through the District’s EnviroHub at Muskoka EnviroHub.
