A woman who was originally pulled over for speeding made her situation much worse when she decided to run from police, a Bracebridge court heard recently.
Miyah McNeill, 20, of St. Catherines recently pleaded guilty to fleeing from police.
Court heard that on Sept. 17, 2022, Bracebridge OOPP was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 in Gravenhurst at around midnight. They clocked a vehicle travelling northbound at 120 km in a 90 km/hr zone and pulled it over on the shoulder of the highway. However, when the officer exited his vehicle, the car sped off.
The office pursued the car, which then accelerated to 150 km/hr and switched off its lights, rapidly changing lanes and overtaking other vehicles on the highway.
The suspects vehicle then used an intersecting street to pull a u-turn and travel southbound. The car then attempted to use the Hwy 11 exit at Bethune Drive in Gravenhurst but failed and landed on its roof in the ditch.
In the car police found two females, including the driver, McNeill, who it was determined did not have a driver’s license.
Justice Robert Gattrell said the facts of the case were “shocking”
“I don’t understand the thought process here,” he said.
McNeill was placed under house arrest for 90 days and given 12 months probation and a 12 month driving ban.

Our justice system tries to be fair, however, 90 days of house arrest should have been jailed for 90 days, and a mental evaluation. This individual has no respect for our laws and her sentence is a catwalk she is probably laughing at the judge with her friends.
The punishment should fit the crime, and lucky no one was killed.

I totally agree with Denise! Every day I read about impaired drivers and the penalties seem so lenient. It’s no wonder there are so many repeat offenders. It makes me feel very nervous driving, especially at night. Perhaps if the penalties were more severe these offenders might learn their lesson, or at least seek help.
