Bracebridge grandmother guilty of $34,000 swindle

A Bracebridge woman was in court recently to plead guilty to stealing more than $34,000 from a relative.

Appearing last month in a Bracebridge courtroom, Lana Young, 69, pled guilty to theft over $5,000.

Court heard Young had been assisting another woman with her finances over the course of several years. However, when the victim’s taxes were done in 2021 a number of discrepancies were found.

A further investigation found $25,000 in falsified transfers from the victim to Young. A number of other transactions were recorded for a range of businesses, as well as unexplained ATM withdrawals. In total, it was estimated that some $34,017 was stolen.

A victim impact statement outlined the social and financial damage the crime had inflicted. It specified that the victim, who has developmental difficulties, could no longer pay rent but had no idea why her cheques were bouncing.

“You should be ashamed of yourself and what you’ve done,” read the statement.

A joint position was put forward for nine months of house arrest followed by three months under curfew

Young’s lawyer said the outstanding $34,017 is currently in trust and it will be paid back, however, there was some confusion as to how exactly that would occur and the matter was put over until July 6.
