Cell phone scuffle leads to solitary confinement

A Beaver Creek inmate only made his situation worse after engaging in a scuffle with prison guards over a cell phone, a Bracebridge court heard recently.

Earlier this month, Anthony McCalla, 40, pled guilty to resisting a peace officer following an incident on Jan. 8, 2022.

Court heard that McCalla is an inmate serving time at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst. Guards at the jail saw him using a cell phone, which is contraband in the institution.

When officers attempt to remove the phone, McCalla resisted and a struggle ensued. There were no injuries to the guards, court heard.

McCalla was transferred and placed in solitary confinement following the incident.

He was also given a suspended sentence and 12 months probation.
