Dorothy “Joan” Johnson

August 6, 1931 — August 21, 2023

Gravenhurst

Johnson, Dorothy Joan (nee McMillan) BA, wife of Maurice for almost 70 years, mother of Barbara of St. George, Bill (Cheryl) of Stouffville, Bob (Brenda) of Newmarket, and Bonnie (Doug Burrell) of Pickering.  Predeceased by her sister Margaret Jean Chapman of Ottawa.  Sister-in-law to Phyllis Rattle of Willowdale and Victor Chapman of Ottawa.  Proud grandmother of nine grandchildren – Marlee and Bradley, Stephen, Tim and Keara, Jenny and Melissa, Brian and Heather-Ann.  Also, great-grandmother to Carter, Rylan and Crosby, Ava and Liam, and Monica.  Joan was a retired teacher with the Scarborough Board of Education (Specialist in Primary Education and Vocal Music).  She passed away on Monday August 21st, 2023, at Granite Ridge Retirement Home in Gravenhurst. 

Joan was a member of the Washago Seniors Club for many years enjoying numerous bus trips and other activities with them.  She started the Washago Seniors Choir in 1999 and enjoyed their many performances.   She and Maurice also travelled with the cruise ships of Holland America, culminating with a World Cruise on the Rotterdam in 2001. 

Cremation has taken place.  It was Joan’s wish to return to the Sparrow Lake area where she met the love of her life at Stanton House over 70 years ago.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully received at her favourite charity – The World Wildlife Federation or the charity of your choice.  A private family gathering will take place to celebrate Joan’s long and happy life!
