Drone-flying drug smuggler ends up behind bars

A man’s effort to fly drugs into Beaver Creek Institution via drone have landed him in jail.

Appearing in a Bracebridge courtroom, Kofi Osei, 26, pled guilty to possession of marijuana for the purpose of distribution and possession of MDMA.

Court heard that on Aug. 18, 2022, the Bracebridge OPP received a call from Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst. Staff at the institution reported a drone dropped a suspicious package onto the grounds of the facility.

The OPP found a suspicious vehicle nearby on Reay Road. Osei was the passenger and the police noticed his pants were soaked up to the knees, consistent with travelling through the marshy areas around the prison.

In the vehicle, they found a drone in a backpack and a package identical to the one that had been dropped at Beaver Creek.

In the package, police found a knife, four lighters, rolling papers, eight packages of marijuana and tobacco. They also found MDMA in the car.

Osei was sentenced to 60 days in custody but court heard he is already in custody facing five years in prison on unrelated charges.
