Fundraiser organized for murdered couple with Muskoka roots

A gofundme campaign has been opened for the families of Carissa MacDonald, 27, and Aaron Stone, 28—a young couple senselessly shot dead by their landlord in a quiet Stoney Creek neighbourhood in Hamilton.

Carissa was born and raised in Huntsville and met Aaron when she moved to Hamilton after high school, according to her aunt Angele MacDonald.

The couple, who were in the process of planning their wedding, got into a heated dispute with their Hamilton landlord on Saturday, May 27, and according to police, as they were fleeing the residence, the landlord shot them. Police allege that 57-year-old Terry Brekka barricaded himself in his home and was later killed during a shootout with police.

The couple had been renting the lower level of the house and the landlord lived upstairs.

Carissa MacDonald worked as an educational assistant at the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board for the past three-and-a-half years and was a Mohawk College graduate. Aaron Stone was an apprentice electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“Needless to say these 2 families are suffering a loss that no one can imagine,” said Angele MacDonald who is married to Carissa’s uncle, David. “David and I are starting this go fund me fundraiser to help the families with funeral costs. Hopefully together, we can take 1 worry away from them by helping them out,” she wrote as part of the gofundme campaign.

Carissa’s mother, who was also born and raised in Huntsville and lost her husband in a car accident when the kids were young, lives in Gravenhurst. Her brother, who owns a property management/landscaping company, lives in Huntsville and she has extended family members in both Huntsville and Bracebridge, according to Carissa’s aunt, who described the couple as hard-working and caring.
