Each month South Muskoka Doppler highlights a student in the co-op programs at both Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS) and Gravenhurst High School (GHS).
This month’s student of the month for GHS brought to you by Stevenson Plumbing-Electrical-HVAC is Boyd Aldom.
Boyd is a Grade 12 co-op student working with Jon Aldom Homes.
Boyd was placed with his father at Jon Aldom Homes, a custom home-building company. He did a half-day placement last year and is in a full-day now.
“It’s good to be out at work, not just in the classroom,” says Boyd. “I like hard work and being outdoors. I also like working with my dad, who teaches me a lot and we have a good time.”
Boyd says the most interesting thing about the construction sector is the variety of work available.
“You go from clearing a building lot with the skid steer to welding one day, then from excavation to putting up trusses the next,” he says. “It feels good working with a crew and you get a bunch of stuff done in a day.”
Boyd is enrolled in the Construction Specialist High Skills Major program at GHS, which gives access to sector-related courses and certifications like Working At Heights. He plans to sign on as a General Carpenter through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and enrol in Level 1 Carpentry offered through Georgian College.
“I’ll stick with the construction of cool projects like big custom homes and cottages, especially ones with cool elements like the one I worked where they brought in concrete, trusses and other supplies with a helicopter because the build was pretty remote,” he says. “I like working in the wild, so eventually I want to go further north – only a really cool project would take me south.”
