Each month South Muskoka Doppler highlights a student in the co-op programs at both Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS) and Gravenhurst High School (GHS).
This month’s student of the month for GHS is Reese Collins.
At GHS there is a thriving art program, and Reese Collins has taken her inspiration from those courses into a desire to explore a career in interior design. She wasn’t sure where to start with this pathway, but the staff at Colour N’ Light Muskoka offered her a half-day co-op opportunity in their Gravenhurst location, and Reese has been growing her career awareness there in amazing ways.
Reese has learned a lot about what it takes to design a space around a client’s needs. The showroom manager, Katrina Wilcock, meets with clients who are interested in redesigning the colour palette and lighting scheme of their desired space, listening to their interests and helping them find the direction that will make the space hit their desired style and vibe.
Katrina has brought Reese into this process by having her participate in all aspects of the work, from the initial consultation, to creation of mood boards to support the client’s vision, and even mixing the paint that the client will be using to make the transition happen.
She’s not only pushing her art skills, but she’s learning important job skills such as customer service, inventory management and collaboration. Thanks to this placement, Reese feels confident that she’s on the right track as considers the pathway her post-secondary journey will take.
