Gravenhurst hit and run leads to impaired charges

A visitor from P.E.I. had some explaining to do recently after admitting to crashing into a parked car in Gravenhurst before fleeing the scene.

Gilles Barriault, 35, of Prince Edward Island, appeared virtually in a Bracebridge courtroom and pleaded guilty to impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Court heard that on January 20, 2023, just before 11:00 p.m., a concerned citizen called the police when they observed a vehicle hit a parked car on Brock Street in Gravenhurst before leaving at a high rate of speed.  The OPP caught up with the driver, Barriault, who was observed to drift from “curb to curb” before being pulled over.

He was arrested and subsequently blew readings of 110 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Court heard Barriault had no previous criminal record and he was sentenced to a $1,700 fine and a one-year driving ban.
