A mother and son from Gravenhurst were looking to do more than just wet their whistle when they took part in a scheme that involved stealing 70 empty water jugs, a Bracebridge court heard recently.
Joyce Werney, 58, recently pled guilty to breach of probation, while Nathan Werney, 33, pled guilty to possession of stolen property and breach of probation.
Last August the Bracebridge OPP launched an investigation into the ongoing theft of large water jugs in the Gravenhurst area.
Approximately 20 jugs were stolen from the Rockhaven Inn in Kilworthy overnight on August 16-17, 2022 and Muskoka Springs on Bay Street in Gravenhurst suffered a loss of approximately 50 jugs between August 24-25, 2022.
According to police, the motivation behind stealing large water jugs is to cash in on the $10 bottle deposit that is refunded when they are turned in to a retailer.
Nathan Werney was arrested in the process of attempting to return the empty bottles to a Gravenhurst grocery store, although he denied actually stealing the jugs.
Court heard that both of the accused were on probation at the time of the incident.
They were each given a suspended sentence and placed on 12 months probation.
