The third member of a trio of smash-and-grab thieves had his day in court recently.
Appearing in a Bracerbridge courtroom last month, Darryl Schell, 45, pled guilty to multiple counts of break-and-enter and breaching the terms of an undertaking.
Court heard that on Nov. 7, 2022, a break-in was reported at Currie’s Music on Muskoka Road in Gravenhurst. Three men smashed their way into the store and stole several guitars, valued at just over $1,000. Following the break-in, the owner of the store began sleeping in his establishment to keep tabs on the business, court heard
Two days later the owner witnessed two men walking down the street just after 4 am carrying bags and boxes. Shortly thereafter he heard the sound of smashing glass and witnessed the men smashing in the front window of Gem & Dia Jewelry store, also located on Muskoka Road.
The witness called the police and the men ran away but not before stealing more than $10,000 worth of merchandise from the jewelry store. The witness identified one of the men, and the police subsequently arrested Schell and two other men.
Schell was later re-arrested for breach of undertaking. Court heard he had been ordered to be in a certain residence but when they arrived to check in on him he was not present.
Schell told the court the primary driver of the crime was to support a drug habit.
He was sentenced to six months of house arrest and three months under curfew.
