Gravenhurst shoplifter lands behind bars

A Gravenhurst woman found herself in jail after stealing from the local Giant Tiger and breaching multiple court-ordered conditions.

Appearing recently in a Bracebridge courtroom, Charmaine Holtz, 44, pled guilty to theft, breaching probation and breaching conditions of a release.

According to a police report on January 28, 2023, at 9:15 p.m. Bracebridge OPP officers responded to an emergency call from a resident on First Street South in Gravenhurst. The caller fled after a person entered his home, harassed several people inside and assaulted him, to call for help.  Holtz was charged with multiple offences, including assault with a weapon, in relation to the incident and released under specific terms.

Court heard that on May 26, 2023, the Bracebridge OPP was contacted by staff at the Giant Tiger in Gravenhurst about a potential shoplifter. Security camera footage revealed Holtz stealing clothes and footwear from the retailer. Holtz was also on probation at the time of the offence and was taken into custody.

She was sentenced to the 20 days she had already served in pre-trial custody and placed on an additional year of probation.
