The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department was dispatched to a fire call at Cottage Lane, off North Waseosa Lake Road, at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023.
Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Chief Gary Monahan said when the crew arrived it became apparent the cottage had been burning for a long time. He said an area resident had indicated that they had heard a hissing sound during the night but could not see the cottage. It was not until the morning that they could see that a fire had engulfed the small log cottage built in the 1930s or earlier.
Fortunately, no one was at the cottage when it caught fire.
Susan Brown, an area real estate agent, resident, and friend of the owner of the backlot said the cottage was a landmark in the area. “It’s very sad, we will all miss that old log cabin. It’s been a landmark on the lake for almost a hundred years.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, according to Monahan.
