Impaired driver leaves restaurant, crashes into rock-cut

A Muskoka driver with a dangerous cocktail of drugs and alcohol in his system sustained serious injuries after crashing into a rock cut.

Appearing in Bracebridge court on May 24, Joseph Thompson, 35, pled guilty to impaired driving.

Court heard that on Aug. 7, 2022, at 6:56 pm police were called after a vehicle struck a rock cut on Muskoka Road 38.

Several witnesses reported they had seen a pickup truck travelling at a high rate of speed before swerving into the rock cut. Court heard that during the crash, the driver, later identified as Thompson, struck his head on the windshield, suffering a “severe laceration and was bleeding profusely in the middle of the roadway,” when paramedics arrived. Court heard that Thompson was acting so aggressively towards the paramedics that a police escort was required to the hospital.

The truck was left “demolished” and the speedometer was locked at 104 km/hr.

Further investigation revealed that Thompson had just left a local brewery and they found cocaine, cannabis and other drugs in his system, along with open liquor in the vehicle.

He was given a $2000 fine, a two-year driving ban and two years probation.
