A Bracebridge man is now under house arrest after admitting to grabbing the wheel of a speeding car while under the influence.
Matthew Caverson, 35, pled guilty to forcible confinement and impaired driving recently in a Bracebridge courtroom.
Court heard that the charge stemmed from an indent in 2021 wherein Caverson was the passenger in a vehicle travelling in excess of 100 km/hr down Highway 11 in Gravenhurst. At the time Caverson was intoxicated and began slamming his head against the window and threatening self-harm.
He then grabbed the wheel of the vehicle and pulled it towards himself. The driver managed to get the vehicle into a parking lot and ran into a restaurant reporting that she was being held against her will.
The police arrived on scene and located Caverson, who was determined to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
Court heard Caverson has a “significant record” of drug, property and violent offences.
There was some discussion as to whether grabbing the wheel constituted impaired driving but in the end the conviction stood.
Caverson was sentenced to four months of house arrest, two months under curfew and 12 months probation.
