Katrine Man Gets 18 Months in Bracebridge Trafficking Case

A Katrine man has been sentenced to 18 months in custody after pleading guilty in Bracebridge court to possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, following an investigation tied to a shooting in Gravenhurst and a subsequent police search that uncovered drugs, cash and pills.

Matthew Hughes, 34, recently pleaded guilty in Bracebridge court to possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.

Court heard that on May 27, 2025, just before midnight, Bracebridge OPP officers, along with Muskoka EMS, responded to reports of a shooting involving two people in a wooded area west of Muskoka Road South in Gravenhurst. One victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries

Following an investigation by the Muskoka Crime Unit, Hughes was charged with multiple offences, including aggravated assault as well as several firearms- and drug-trafficking-related charges.

Later the same day, police executed a search warrant at a motel in Bracebridge, where Hughes had rented two rooms. A Land Rover associated with him, which he had been seen operating before and after the incident, was also searched.

Inside the motel rooms, officers located 21 grams of cocaine packaged into seven separate portions. A further 26 grams of cocaine was found in the Land Rover. Police also seized $1,159 in cash, believed to be proceeds of crime, along with 16 hydromorphone tablets and additional unidentified pills.

Hughes was sentenced to 18 months in custody, followed by 18 months of probation, and received a lifetime weapons prohibition. Remaining related charges are still before the courts.
