The Ontario Winter Games were held in Renfrew County between February 2-5 and February 9-12 with a much larger number of participants competing compared to the prior weekend of the Ontario Parasport Winter Games held in Durham county.
Local para Nordic athlete Nathan Perry was competing along with Olympic stream category of athletes in this multi-sport event. This event was good preparation for the next multisport event of the Canada Winter Games in which he will be competing. Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club ARC racing program was also in attendance and giving support to the para-athletes. The opening ceremonies of the Ontario Winter Games were to have taken place at the Ma-te-way Recreational Complex baseball diamonds on Friday evening. The freezing rain throughout the late afternoon and into the evening helped the committee to make the decision to host a virtual opening ceremony.
The event was held at a brand-new facility built specifically for the Ontario Winter Games. The town of Renfrew made the decision to build cross country ski trails behind their community center for the event. This project is one of the many legacy features as a result of hosting the games.
Port Sydney’s Nathan Perry came to Renfrew on Day 2 of the competition and competed in the para sit skiing distance competition of 3 km. Nathan finished the course in second place behind Konan Blaise from Sudbury’s Kivi Park Nordic ski team. In the female para sit-ski category, Erica Scarff from Mono Nordic ski club took first place followed by Tanya Quesnel from Sudbury Kivi Park. In the standing para categories, Logan Lariviere from Kivi Park Nordic took another gold medal in the men’s, Madison Mullin from Mono Nordic took the gold medal in the women’s standing followed by Audreanne Soenens from Kivi Park Nordic in Sudbury.
Nathan will be travelling to Prince Edward Island to compete at the Canada Winter Games in his first national championship starting February 26 until March 6. Watch live streaming of these events through the Canada Winter Games website.
