Restaurant employee puts the brakes on potential impaired drive

A quick-thinking server helped get a potential impaired driver off the road in Gravenhurst, a court heard recently.

Appearing in a Bracebridge courtroom, Eric Barber, 30, of Gravenhurst pled guilty to failing to provide a breath sample.

Court heard that on April 8, 2020, at 10:46 pm police were called by a restaurant employee in Gravenhurst about a possible impaired driver. The employee said the patron had consumed six alcoholic beverages before leaving the establishment.

Police found the driver, Barber, and pulled him over. Barber denied being at the restraint or having consumed any alcohol but police smelled alcohol on his breath and he refused to take a breathalyzer test, court heard.

Court heard Barber has a previous criminal record and he was fined $2,000 and given a one-year driving ban.
