Perched on the granite cliffs overlooking scenic Muskoka Bay, The Alexander Muskoka Residence is Gravenhurst’s newest retirement home but the facility is also so much more.
Officially opened earlier this month, The Alexander has 102 units made up of 70 Independent, 14 Assisted Living and 18 Memory Care suites.
They also offer 30 Affordable Housing studio units for those who are income/asset qualified. They are also currently offering a Grand Opening Promotion.
Move in by June 30th and get $1,500 towards moving expenses. For a short time, The Alexander is also waiving the second occupant fee of $1,500/month for the first 20 Founding Member Couple Residents in Independent Living.
The Alexander is about much more than its breathtaking location, it’s about a new way of looking at retirement residences.
“We really want our residents to experience a connection to their community and joyful living,” says Leonard Ohja, who developed The Alexander with his wife Marie. “We want our families to know that their loved ones are safe and getting the care they need. We want our staff to know they’re valued and appreciated for the important work they do.”
The couple have been coming to Muskoka since they were teenagers and have now moved here permanently. Both have long careers in the healthcare field, including Leonard’s experience managing a large ambulatory care program at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and Marie’s background of over 25 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with 14 of those years as a Nurse Practitioner
The couple is committed to providing exceptional healthcare for the Muskoka community.
Independent living at The Alexander is designed for older adults who can manage their activities of daily living while seeking the convenience of freshly prepared meals served in the water view dining room, weekly housekeeping and laundry service, organized activities, social opportunities, and the enhanced safety that The Alexander offers. Nestled in the part of the building closest to the waterfront, The Alexander offers studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites.
The assisted living option is for older adults who may need help with medication management, mobility, and daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting.
“A continuous assessment of a resident’s needs enables staff to anticipate that the appropriate level of care is always in place,” says Marie. “The dedicated team is there to provide you with the right level of support so that you can continue to enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle and not have to move again.”
Dementia, which includes conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, is characterized by a decline in memory, reasoning, and other cognitive functions. Memory Care at The Alexander provides compassionate support that meets thoughtful design and a nurturing environment for our residents facing challenges associated with dementia. Located on the first floor, the Memory Care area allows residents to safely move around freely while providing families with peace of mind.
“We want our residents to thrive and to be as independent for as long as possible,” says Leonard. “Residents will engage in purposeful activities individualized to their preferences and personal history, and our staff members receive specialized training in dementia care.”
Within the dedicated Memory Care floor, residents have access to various common amenity spaces, including a family room, a quieter lounge, and a dining room that opens up to our Memory Care Garden.

Congratulations Marie and Leonard, Thanks for the tour of your exceptional new residence. I remember you sharing your dream with me 4-5 years ago to build a CARING home for those getting older. You have succeeded and I wish you and all your residents the best of living in Gravenhurst.Cheers, Gord Durnan
