Tim Withey enters mayoral race in Lake of Bays

Former Huntsville Councillor and longtime community volunteer Tim Withey has officially entered the race to become the next Mayor of the Township of Lake of Bays.

Withey filed his nomination papers earlier today, becoming the second candidate to declare their intention to run for Mayor of Lake of Bays in the Oct. 26, 2026, municipal election.

A former Huntsville ward and District councillor, Withey says his campaign will focus on the issues he believes matter most to Lake of Bays residents: financial accountability, environmental sustainability and healthcare.

“While the particulars of my platform have yet to be announced, one thing is for certain,” said Withey. “I am passionate about Lake of Bays, its people and possibilities.”

“I look forward to the campaign,” he added.

Withey also indicated he wants to examine the role of District government and explore ways to improve the delivery of municipal services while reducing costs and improving efficiency for residents.

A resident of Huntsville for more than 38 years, Withey recently relocated to Baysville and has purchased a home in Lake of Bays. He is the founder and owner of Withey Insurance Brokers Ltd., a Huntsville-based brokerage, and has longstanding ties to the area through his family’s leasehold property in Algonquin Park. His grandfather secured the lease in 1919, giving Withey a lifelong connection to the region.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies from Trent University, and he has identified environmental sustainability as one of his key priorities.

During his time on Huntsville Council, Withey served as chair of both the Community Services and Corporate Services committees. At the District level, he was a member of the Health Services Committee.

Much of Withey’s public service experience has centred on healthcare governance. Since the mid-1990s, he has served on numerous healthcare-related boards, including the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital Board, Fairvern Nursing Home Board, Northern Shores District Health Council and the Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare Board, where he served as vice-chair.

His community involvement has also included leadership roles with Algonquin Grace Hospice, Simcoe Muskoka Crime Stoppers and the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce. In 2016, he was appointed by the Province of Ontario to the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network Board.

Currently, Withey serves on several boards and organizations, including Rosseau Lake College, the regional OPP board, the Algonquin Forestry Authority, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Algonquin Park Residents Association, where he serves as president.

“As a councillor, I have a proven track record of digging deep and finding the efficiencies necessary to keep taxes down while continuing to deliver essential services,” said Withey. “I have also been actively involved in resolving issues pertaining to sustainability and our healthcare system.”
