It was a big night for the Toronto Rock on Saturday as they doubled up the Albany Firewolves, and a big night for the people of Wahta Mohawk Territory as they took part in Indigenous Heritage Night.
In front of the crowd at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, members of the Wahta Youth Council took part in reading the Great Lacrosse Game prior to the action.
Youth member Jace and Councillor Lorie Fenton-Strength then took to the centre area to participate in a smudging ceremony to open the game.
Members of the Territory also attended the game in a special section of the area and took in Toronto’s 12-6 victory.
The National Lacrosse League’s Indigenous Heritage Night honours the roots of the game of lacrosse and celebrates many aspects of Indigenous culture.
Prior to the game and at halftime, Haudenosaunee Dancers also performed traditional style dances. At halftime, both men and women participated in a Wooden Stick Game.
