A section of Winewood Avenue in Gravenhurst is set for a significant overhaul, including resurfacing, water main repairs and the creation of a new pedestrian walkway across from the Centennial Centre.
The District of Muskoka’s Engineering and Public Works Committee approved the award of contract for the project to Fowler Construction for $1,348,588 during their latest meeting. The work will stretch from Bethune Drive to Muskoka Road 18.
Mark Misko, the District Director of Engineering and Transportation explained that the plan had originally been to do the work last year but it was determined that watermain repairs were also needed and it was decided to merge the two projects.
The plan also includes the creation of a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Winewood Avenue and Muskoka Beach Road facilitating crossing from the Gravenhurst Centennial Centre. Misko said the crosswalk will have tactile plates and a pushbutton audible signal to meet the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act regulation. It will also have overhead flashing lights.
Gravenhurst Mayor Heidi Lorenz questioned whether CN has been informed of the work, with an eye towards potential improvements to the section of road where the train tracks cross Winewood.
Staff indicated CN has been informed of the project but when they choose to make improvements is entirely up to them.
This contract is scheduled to commence on July 24, 2023, and will be substantially completed by October 6, 2023, according to staff.
During construction, rolling single-lane closures will be in effect. Local access will be continuously maintained, however through traffic will be discouraged. Due to a high level of uncertainty about existing infrastructure, and the potential for conflict, the contractor may require isolated full road closures while underground works are completed. Unexpected closures will be advertised through online communication and on-site signage with a minimum of 10 business days notice, and appropriate detour routes will be provided and indicated, said staff.
